Can someone tell me what is involved in placing crowns on a toddler? My 2-1/2 year old is getting four crowns in two weeks and while they've told me it will take around three hours, they haven't told me what the procedure entails. I'm also wondering what the criteria is for placing the crown. She has one tooth that is chipped pretty badly and I'm really hoping they can still put a crown on it since there's not that much of it left. I will be a mess if she has to have it extracted. My poor baby. Any info to help put my mind at ease is welcome. Thanks!

Depending on the extent of the decay to the tooth, the dentist perform a root canal before placing a crown on the tooth. If this is the case, the dentist may need to build a foundation for the crown after the root canal has been performed, also known as a "post-and-core" foundation. Before the crown can be placed on the tooth, the dentist must file the tooth down to make room for it. Then an impression of the tooth and the surrounding teeth will be made. While the crown is being created, a temporary acrylic crown will be placed on the tooth. When the permanent crowns are ready, the temporary crowns are replaced at a separate visit. The crown will last anywhere from seven to 40 years.
