Thanks for all the opinions and stories on this board. It's good to know that I am not the only one with a child with problematic teeth.
My son has had nightmare after nightmare with his teeth since he was 3. This is tough to explain because his older sister has been relatively trouble free (just now getting her first minor cavity at age 7).
He first had cavities on his lower front teeth at age three. The dentists did a "discing" proceedure, which shaved off the sides of the teeth, taking the cavity with them. Then a few months later, one of the teeth became traumatized and turned pink. It was deteriorating from the inside and needed to be extracted by an oral surgeon because it was probably too brittle to be taken out by normal methods.
Then when he was 4, cavities were detected in all 8 of his back teeth. They tried to divide the cavity work in 4 visits... 2 teeth at a time... one quandrant at a time. He bravely made it through the first session, but after knowing what to expect for the 2nd visit, it was too much and too stressful for all involved to proceed.
So an operating room visit was scheduled last fall and the remaining teeth were worked on. Though it was painfully expensive, the work seemed to have been successful. Now 6 months later, we've got more problems... Additional cavities in the same teeth... cavities coming in around the fillings. And at least one of the fillings looks to be loose.
Considering his history, we're looking at needing to get crowns. From the typical crowning proceedures I am seeing on the internet, it seems that crowns are done in two part visits. Is this the case with childrens crowns on back teeth?
I read on another message that metal crowns don't require multiple visits... If this is the case, bring on the chrome!
