My son (he turned 4 in November) needs quite a few things done. He has successfully had 2 appointments using nitrous ~ the first one involved a pulpotomy and a temp filling in one tooth, and a permanent filling in another. The second was for placement of a steel crown on the molar with the temp filling. When we went back last week for another filling, this is what happened, quoted from an email to friends:
He had another dental appt today and it did not go well. He put the nitrous mask on, and then when the dentist swabbed his mouth with the topical anesthetic, he freaked out. Ripped off the mask, wouldn't cooperate at all. So the dentist then said he needed to be referred to someone for general, which of course I don't want if we can help it. I asked about a step in between, and he mentioned that he gives Halcion sometimes if people are really anxious. Explained that some people respond by getting sleepy, etc and some bounce off the walls. He suggested giving C .25 mg to see how he would react. So we did that and it was like C. was drunk. Stayed awake (got sleepy looking but did not fall asleep), but was stumbling around, just being really silly. It has worn off I think and he is now ultra-grumpy. The dentist says that next time he will give him .5 mg and maybe nitrous and likely be able to do everything he needs done in the one visit.
I know that said her kids had Versed, is that correct? I'm wondering why the dentist uses Halcion and not Versed for children? I've read a little bit and it says that most use Versed, so I'm confused and wondering if the Halcion is safe enough for him to get. Anyone have experience with the kid getting Halcion? They crushed it up and gave it to him in orange juice.
I have read a little bit about dentists using Halcion in young children, came across one report using it with a 23 month old child, and everything apparently went well. On the contrary, it seems that Versed is perhaps not as safe as the Halcion, in regards to it possibly depressing breathing and such more than the Halcion. But then this morning, on a discussion board, I've had 1 person tell me that Versed is better and I should switch dentists, and another tell me that she worked for dentists 15 years ago and there were concerns about Halcion and talk of pulling it off the market! I don't know who or what to believe! Please, if anyone has any experience or opinions, share them with me. I am a nervous wreck over the idea, and just wish he could use the nitrous. He did have a bit of a stuffy nose that day, so I'm wondering if the mask made it difficult to breathe and that frightened him? The comment he made when he took off the mask was "I can't breathe!", whereas like I mentioned, he has been fine other times.
Thanks in advance for any info/advice/BTDT replies!
