Okay, my son is not 4 years old, he's 15 and we have a question. My son has slight cross-bite only on the left side --- otherwise his teeth are lined up perfectly. The ortho wants to put on a palatal separator which I think is horrible. I know, the roof of the mouth is not solid bone, it's soft cartlidge. Still the thought of this appliance bugs me. When he was little he had a device called a "w-arch". It pushed the teeth out sideways in effect. That helped his cross-bite. My question is this: if the cross-bite isn't that bad, and his line up perfectly (which I'm told the palatal separator will put a large gap in his front teeth) why fix the problem. What are the chances of TMJ or other problems? What other problems are there? I need to know, because I'm really battling this separator thing in my mind.
