I took my son (DOB 09-20-01) to the dentist last week because I saw a cavity (I thought) on his last molar. The dentist stated that it was the most recent tooth to come in and there is no decay evident on any teeth. However, this particular tooth does have a hole in the center because the tooth did not completely close when it came in. He stated that the tooth did need to be filled within the next month or so and that I had two options. A) conscious sedation in the office procedure or B) general anasthesia outpatient hospital procedure.
Here's the dilema, he informed me that he uses a drug called verset (?) that is taken orally - he described it as similar to valium but stronger (I'm assuming a benzodiazapine). However, he stated that on children his age they are not sedated like an older child or an adult would be. He stated that my son will still resist, struggle, cry, etc... BUT that he won't remember the experience.
my first thought was put him under!!! He may not remember, but I will !!! His father is concerned about the risks of anasthesia. The procedure is only about ten minutes long he stated. I'm not sure what to do or even how medically necessary the procedure is.
Please advise. Sebastiansmom

Dear Sebastiansmom,
Oral Versed is a commonly used sedative agent in pediatric dental practices.
I causes children to forget what happens after they take the medication.
Alas, there are no perfect sedatives for children - so children often cry during dental treatment using Versed (or any other sedative).
Ideally, dental caries should be restored as soon as they are identified.
