My 3 year old had two root canals. They put him under general anethesia to do it, and he was totally fine within hours of waking up. No noticeable pain at all.

I was just reading about your 4yr old son needed a root canal.
we just found out our 4yr old son needs a root canal. I havent slept all night. I too am very nervous about the procedure. Can you let me know how you made out.
We have been giving him motrin for the discomfort. Any suggestions on this . I feel I should be giving him something else. We are hoping to have more information on monday as to when he will be able to go have it done. I am very nervous about the sedation any thing you can share on this.
thanks

Relax. Pulpotomies are pretty routine for the restoration of primary molars. They are just as easy as ordinary fillings. Your child should have very little post-op discomfort. Don't compare them to root canals on permanent teeth. Totally different. Good luck.

Well my son had his rootcanal done today . It was horriable!!!!!!!!!! They gave him something to drink for a sediative and nitrous. He had a reverse reaction instead of being sleepy he became aggressive and abusive.......He started hitting everyone.....I had to go in and hold him down across his chest! They finale got the root canal done and put the silver cap on....The doctor advised me that the tooth really needs to be extracted. And he will have to go to the OR to be ,put to sleep to do any other procedures on him.....Due to the way he reacted......Is this normal? I am very concerned.

Help! My son also needs a "pulpectomy" or a "pulpotomy" (i guess there is a difference?). He hurt his front tooth, not a molar. It was sticking out from his mouth at 90 degrees. We quickly pushed it back in and went to ER. They consulted with dentist and we were sent home with an emergency dentist visit for the next morning. They took one xray (film held between the top and bottom teeth) and said he would need this procedure. The tooth is expected to turn dark and they can put a composite on it that would last 3-4 months (?!). If the tooth is still loose then it will have to come out. No one has said anything about space maintenance yet. I have many concerns because my son has some special needs, he has developmental delays and oral motor delays. I am worried about the anesthesia too. They wanted to know if i wanted a sooner appointment with a "fast anesthesia" which is something they put in the nose. They said it would be unpleasant and stinging and did i want to do that. Well, there is no way my son would tolerate that well. So i opted to wait for the "regular anesthesia" appointment. This will be something he drinks, and isa reportedly bad tasting, so I suspect that will be a problem too. I was not given any info about what it will actually be. Also, the dentist said they would drill a hole in the tooth and put some "medicine" in it. I would have appreciated a lot more information and intend to try to get this over the phone. Oh yes, the "regular anesthesia" appt isn't for 6 weeks. That seems long based on what i have been reading online. If the tooth is going to come out anyway I would much rather he lost it at home than at the dentist office. But if it can be saved without too much stress on him I suppose that would be better? My ped said he'd adjust to the change in his mouth and his speech and feeding would accomodate. But he is newly 4 years and I understand that top front teeth don't come in until 7-8 years! yikes! We really don't know what will be best for our son. I have spent the day searching online and can make arguements for either extraction or baby root canal, based on different things I have read. There are apparently good reasons against both of those too. So, any advice or comments will be much appreciated as we try to decide what to do next. thanks! diane
