Hello My 5 year old son had an amalgam filling on a molar 6 months ago. During his recent check up exam the dentist said this filling was cracked and it needed to be replaced. I am very surprised to hear we need to replace a filling after 6 month ... Is it something common? Could the filling poorly done 6 months ago? thank you for your help. Veronique

It is really strange to hear. I think your dentist haven’t done it correctly. Usually composite fillings last nearly 5-7 years. It could last longer than amalgam fillings.

Considering your issue I guess the dentist has used a temporary filling in the beginning, so it’s common nothing to worry about it. You can ask the dentist to do a permanent filling which will stay on for few years.

Normally a filling should last 5-10 years, but many things can affect that prognosis. Small silver filling could last for decades, but most tooth colored fillings will fail within 10 years under good conditions. Maybe your dentist hasn’t done a good filling for your child try to change the doctor.

Well it really depends on the quality of stuff which will be using to your teeth. A good one will last life long but the low quality ones will be stay for few years.

It lasts around 5 years, it may vary according to the type of filling that you do and the materials that are used.

I think its all depend on your dentist how he treated your son what kind of material he used at the time of filling.

Usually fillings last nearly 5 years at least. Seems like your dentist hasn't done it properly. You better go for a refilling under a good dentist.

I’m not so sure because I just filled my teeth yesterday, the dentist said that it was temporary. He said to come back in a months’ time to make it permanent so that means quite a long time.

I did my very first filing when I was 9, still have it like a solid rock.... So it's long lasting.
