Dear Dena,
A soft lump on the gum tissue next to a tooth means that it has an abscess. This can sometimes happen to a tooth which has had a pulpotomy done, as well as to a tooth which has not been treated.
The appearance of a facial virus in the area of a treated tooth may be a coincidence.
Finally, dentist do not give an infected extracted tooth to the parent or child because of the residual bacteria still on the tooth - the bacteria can cause skin infections in someone who touches it.

My 4 year old had two teeth extracted 6 mo ago, and was sent home with both of them, but when I had my wisdom teeth extracted a year ago, I was told it was illegal for them to be given to me. I thought it was odd, too. Also, he had a pulpotomy 1 month ago, and the dentist told me that sometimes the procedure is not alway successful, in which case the abcess returns, and the tooth then has to be removed. So far we're in the clear, but I continue to watch it.

My daughter is 4 years old, and we found out that she will also need a root canal and a cavity filled. However, it will be done on her two upper front teeth. I noticed that others say there is a metal cap involved after a root canal. Considering that it is her front tooth, is thiere a way to get a natural looking cap instead of something metal? Also, our dentist mentioned there is only a 50/50 chance that getting the root canal will solve the problem. Meaning an infection may still occur. Our only other option is to get the teeth pulled, but her new teeth won't be coming in for so long, that I was trying to avoid that option. Is the best bet to get the root canal and hope for the best?
